Why the FDA commissioned the study

Tampons are regulated as medical devices in the United States. Manufacturers must meet FDA requirements, but public concern rose after earlier research detected metals in tampon material. Detecting a substance is not the same as showing that the body absorbs a harmful dose. The key unanswered question was how much could be released during use.

The 2026 study, published in Toxicological Sciences, focused on that release step. Researchers placed products in simulated menstrual fluid and measured selected metals that moved from the tampon into the fluid.

What the researchers tested

The sample included 11 products representing six brands and five manufacturers. The researchers evaluated several metals and compared estimated exposure with health-protective reference values. Their laboratory conditions were intentionally conservative: longer contact and warmer temperatures than typical use were chosen to avoid underestimating release.

Every calculated margin of safety was above 1. In the study’s framework, that means estimated exposure was lower than the dose expected to raise a safety concern. The authors concluded that the measured metals were unlikely to pose a health risk under the tested conditions.

A detectable chemical is not automatically a dangerous exposure. Risk depends on the amount released, absorbed and repeated over time.

What the study cannot tell us

This was a laboratory exposure assessment, not a clinical trial. It did not place tampons in people, measure metals in blood or urine, or directly study vaginal absorption. The product sample was useful but small compared with the full market, and formulations can change.

The study also does not mean “zero metals.” Cotton and other natural materials can contain trace elements from soil, water, processing and manufacturing. Safety decisions depend on exposure, not simply presence.

How to use tampons safely

  • Use the lowest absorbency that manages your flow.
  • Change a tampon every four to eight hours and never leave one in for more than eight hours.
  • Use tampons only during menstruation, and wash your hands before and after insertion.
  • Stop use and seek advice if a product causes persistent pain, unusual discharge, irritation or an allergic reaction.

Seek urgent medical care for sudden fever, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness or fainting, a sunburn-like rash, or confusion while using a tampon. These can be signs of toxic shock syndrome, a rare but serious emergency. Remove the tampon while arranging urgent care.

The bottom line

The FDA’s 2026 results are reassuring: under exaggerated laboratory conditions, estimated exposure to the measured metals stayed below the study’s safety thresholds. The responsible interpretation is neither “tampons contain no metals” nor “any detected metal is dangerous.” It is that this release study found no expected safety concern, while direct absorption research and broader market surveillance remain useful next steps.
